As required by the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy and the DEA, the Pharmacist-in-Charge of a health care institution must ensure that narcotics are being stored, administered, and recorded appropriately and within the letter of the law, and must be able to prove that this accountability is being performed. This accountability process is being conducted through random controlled substance audits.
The plan is to conduct monthly random audits on various units so as to audit each unit within the hospital approximately 4 times throughout the year. The audits will focus on the following:
- Was there an order for the medication? Was the medication administration documented?
- Using Pyxis records, was the correct amount of drug withdrawn from Pyxis, given to patient, and/or
wasted properly through the Pyxis system?
Please be sure to give medications as soon as possible, document on the MAR and waste all medications not used ASAP. |
